Seven Years in the Making: Oklahoma Enacting Comprehensive Consumer Privacy Law

Senate Bill 546 cleared the Oklahoma House 84–4, positioning the state to become the 21st to enact a comprehensive privacy framework.

After nearly a decade of legislative effort, Oklahoma moved decisively toward enacting a comprehensive consumer data privacy law on February 19, 2026, when the Oklahoma House of Representatives passed Senate Bill 546 by an overwhelming 84–4 vote. The bill, authored by Senator Brent Howard (R) and co-sponsored by House Majority Leader Josh West (R), now awaits Senate concurrence on House amendments before proceeding to Governor Kevin Stitt for signature.

Effort to help ex-felons secure employment revived in Oklahoma Legislature

OKLAHOMA CITY — Lawmakers are expected to revise an effort next session to make it easier for felons who have served their time to get jobs.

Last session, Sen. Jack Stewart, R-Yukon, filed Senate Bill 1077, called the Ban the Box legislation. It would bar employers from asking on a job application or during the hiring process whether a candidate has felony conviction.

But the bill would allow employers to request a background report if a conditional employment offer has been made.

Oklahoma House Passes Consumer Data Privacy Bill

Keypoint: As it did last year, the Oklahoma House passed a consumer data privacy bill.

On March 23, 2022, the Oklahoma House voted 74-15 (with 11 excused) to pass Representative Collin Walke’s HB2969 – the Oklahoma Computer Data Privacy Act. The bill now moves to the Senate. Last year, the Oklahoma House also passed a version of this bill, only to see it stall in the Senate Judiciary Committee. The bill is generally based on the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) although it contains notable differences.
